In the swell of Earth Day videos, the "Green Cup Challenge" (GCC) stood out for us, because it's fun, and because it is by, for, and all about students. According to its YouTube bio, "GCC ... supports student efforts to measure and reduce campus electricity use and related greenhouse gas emissions, and to encourage water efficiency, waste reduction, and recycling."

As many of you know by now, the Energy Circle family's dedication to measurement extends very directly to the kids, whose devotion to conserving energy is spurred on by the fact that they profit when utility bills drop. Makes sense. After all, as kids are quick to remind us, we may be stuck with the bills now, but it's their future. (Check out how David Suzuki capitalizes on this).

Here's is The Hill School's 2009 Green Cup Challenge Video:

We should note that we liked the Clinton Foundation video, too, though we had some concern that the former President's alarmingly pink tie might contribute to global warming. No, seriously, strong work, from the Empire State Building to LED streetlights in L.A.

Every room of your house contains opportunities to reduce your own “carbon footprint.” By making changes in your own usage, you can not only save money, but encourage others (including your own kids) through you example: Lower the thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter and raise it to 78 degrees in the summer  Use fans and shade to reduce reliance upon air conditioners  Winterize and Summerize your home to reduce “leaks”  Set the water heater to 120F/50C or lower  Invest in a programmable thermostat to lower levels when you're asleep or not at home  Maintain furnaces and change filters regularly  Use a thermal blanket around your water heater  Replace old single-paned windows  Plant trees in your landscape  Choose renewable power options through your power company  Install solar panels and micro-wind turbines of your own  Clean the air conditioner filter Posted by Beverly Clarke on Apr 24, 2009 6:54am
