With Independence Day fast approaching, we here at Energy Circle have been discussing practical ways to display our patriotism. Our consensus is: since for the past half-century we have been highly Dependent on largely foreign sources of energy, it's time we once again declared our Independence - not in a protectionist way, mind you; but in a simple, traditionally American, rugged individualist way. Let's begin once again to practice the self-reliance lauded by Jefferson and Emerson and exemplified by Thoreau, Daniel Boone, and... well, Rosie the Riveter.
In terms of cutting energy consumption in the home, there is probably no single action you can take that will have more of an impact than air sealing - not new windows, not solar, not better appliances. We've determined, therefore, that the best way for us to buttress our Independence this July 4th is by tackling air leaks. Really.
If the first Revolution was fought with muskets, our suggestion is that the next Revolution be fought with caulking guns.
