For the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service coming up on Monday, ReCharge America is encouraging folks to create their own day of service in their home or their community by picking some of the low hanging fruit of home energy efficiency. ReCharge America is a nationwide volunteer service founded in 2009 by Clean Tech for Obama (for which Energy Circle founder Peter Troast served as co-chair for Maine), and ecoAmerica, as a response to President Obama's call to service.
In keeping with President Obama's service initiative, as well as our own efforts to promote and encourage energy efficiency, we're absolutely psyched about ReCharge America's efforts. We applaud them, above all, for reminding us that energy efficiency is, in fact, a service: whether to your own budget, your planet, your community, your neighbors, your country, or all of the above. And for those of us "in the know" about energy efficiency, we believe that spreading the word is one of the greatest services we can provide.
We've long advocated home energy efficiency as a way to save money, help the environment, and create a healthier living environment for you and your family. What's often under-appreciated is the fact that saving energy is a patriotic act! Any steps that we take to reduce our dependence on dirty energy sources and promote energy independence are steps toward a healthier, safer America.
In that spirit, we'd like to join with ReCharge America in encouraging you, your friends and your family to dedicate some part of this coming Monday to serve the cause of home energy efficiency. Since so many in the Energy Circle community have already tackled the basics, think about calling up a friend or a neighbor to encourage them to do the same. Or take a moment to think about taking your home project to the next level.
Check out ReCharge America's video featuring Lisa Ling (of Oprah and CNN's Planet in Peril), discussing ten easy ways to give back (and save money by doing it), and be sure to check out ReCharge America's home energy savings kit, as well as our Learn section and our store, for more ways to save energy, lower your bills, and help ensure a healthier, more secure future for your country. Think of it as a form of nonviolent activism.
