If you're an energy geek like us, at some point in time you may have found yourself wondering something along these lines: What if I were to be completely energy independent? How much exercise would I need to do to to supply all the necessary energy to get me through an entire day? How much food would it take to fuel all that exercise?

Well, some folks over in the U.K. were wondering the same thing, and they came up with a project called "Energy Diet" that sets out to answer those questions.

A collaboration between Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University College London and EDF Energy, Energy Diet that aims "to engage the public in the highly complex and intangible topic of energy consumption in a more human and entertaining way," according to their website.

A few fun facts from their intro video (below):

  • The average EU citizen uses 50 times the energy that they can obtain through food.
  • Having your fridge on for one day = the calories of 15 fried eggs.
  • Running a space heater for 4 days = the calories of 215 fish 'n chips dinners.

Here's a quick video that gives an overview of Energy Diet, and here's a tip of the hat to Inhabitat for tipping us off to this cool project. Oh, and be sure to check out our full library of articles on home energy efficiency to learn more about how you can reduce the amount of energy that you consume in a day.
