Earlier this week the good folks at Nest Labs released the updated Nest Learning Thermostat - to all outward appearances it looks like the old one got a new haircut (solid control ring), some cosmetic dental work (new grill), lost some weight (20% thinner), took some French classes (French & Spanish actually), and went on a pilgrimage seeking enlightenment (software & UI improvements). Like so many makeovers however, the true changes are on the inside with improved software, easier to handle hardware and an even better attitude. Enhancements include:
- The already awesome easy-press connector system got even better, making an easy install even easier.
- The new Nest is compatible with “95% of 24V heating and cooling systems” including heat pumps, radiant systems, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, geothermal, forced air, solar, gas, electric, oil and hot water.
- Substantial software improvements (3.0) include a tuned auto-away system, improved heat/cooling scheduling as well a better understanding of individual system and fuel type performance (heat pump balancing, true radiant heating etc).
- Updated mobile apps for iOS and Android with improved energy use reporting.
All in all, this sounds pretty great. However, let’s not get too excited here people. Nest seems to have really dropped the ball on a few critical issues, most importantly it still doesn’t play Angry Birds – making it possibly the only piece of advanced electronics in a home that cannot entertain my five year old niece.
Also, where are the Advanced Shaming features rumored to be coming? Data is great and all, but the strongest tool for behavioral change is tapping into deep seated feelings of inadequacy.
