Facebook Local BusinessWe’ve written extensively about the benefits of social media for independent home energy businesses. In this era, when 97% of consumers search for local businesses online, it’s extremely important that you’re there when people are looking for your services -- whether they’re looking for them on Google, on Bing, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Well, Facebook just released its 3rd quarter financials, and with them an interesting tidbit for the skeptics: 12.8 million businesses now have Facebook pages, a 16.4% increase from three months ago. We hate to say “we told you so,” but that’s pretty strong growth, which highlights the fact that more and more businesses are deciding that they simply can’t run the risk of not being on the ‘book. Perhaps even more interesting is that at the last known count Google+ Local had roughly 8 million claimed business pages. We've always said Google is more important (hey, its Google, right?) but that may change in the future if Facebook's business presence and user base continue to grow at this kind of incredible pace.

These days, it may even be less about “going viral” or developing a huge following on the social media platform itself, but the fact that simply being there gives your business some credibility in the eyes of Google and other search engines. It’s an indication that you’re a real business, and not some fly-by-night scam artist, and consequently helps you out in the new internet ecosystem where trust is extremely important.

So hopefully this incredible pace of growth in Facebook business pages means that you have taken our advice to heart and gotten yours set up and rolling. And if not - what are you waiting for? We've said it before and will keep saying it, Facebook is no longer optional. Even if you don't enjoy social media and don't want to "like" and comment and share, you still need to make sure your business is there for people to see. A presence on Facebook creates trust, promotes your brand, helps you rank in local search, allows for conversation and testimonials, and so much more.
