Product Description

A smaller, lighter version of the RL6, with a narrower beam, the L1 uses only 2 AA batteries. It is lightweight and comfortable for long periods of use. The L1 has multiple light mode settings; ultra-bright, bright, power-save, and emergency strobe. The headlamp automatically switches to the power-save mode when the battery life reaches 15%. At its brightest setting, the L1 will operate for 8 hours on one set of batteries, projecting its beam from 32 to 35 meters (105 to 115 feet). In its "power-save" mode it will operate for 85 hours, projecting its beam 10 to 11 meters (33 to 36 feet). Check this out: Brunton measures the maximum distance as the point where the light level still exceeds 25 lux, roughly equivalent to the amount of light cast by a full moon!

With a lot of backpacking and a healthy bit of mountaineering under my belt, I've found myself in some potentially unhealthy situations with a trashy headlamp - middle of the night, in the wilderness, you need to be able to see; especially if there's foul weather rolling in - and I will be the first to say that this is certainly not one of them. Never had a problem since I upgraded; best headlamp I've ever used. I would say that you definitely need to go with an LED either way, because they last forever and have the best light, and this particular one is great, top notch, superb.
