Quick Overview

A motion-sensing switch to ease your mind and your electrical bill.

Product Description

With a sixth sense for energy efficiency, the Hubbell Motion-Sensing Wall Switch will change the way you think about lighting in your home. It senses a person's presence in the room and automatically turns on, then turns off again automatically anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes (you set the delay) after the room becomes vacant. (We have it on good authority that the thrill of the running-in-and-out-of-the-room- to-trick-the-lights game wears off in short order, and your family members will return to more normal patterns). What's more, you'll never have to worry about leaving the lights on again. The Hubbell works using a dual voltage (120/277 volt) passive infrared (PIR) occupancy sensor and can replace any of your existing light-switches using two connections to two hot wires and one ground wire. The Hubbell can work with either incandescent (old fashioned) or CFL (compact florescent lamps) bulbs. The motion detector works for up to 16 feet to the sides and 35 feet ahead, but it can be adjusted to fit the room or area you need it to. This is one of the smartest light switches you'll ever come across. It's so smart, in fact, it'll make you feel smart!

A while back, I got something that looks very much like this switch, but is just a knock-off.  I installed a one of them in my basement to control a pair CFLs, plus another to control a regular tube fluorescent fixture over the washer.  The Home Depot models were highly directional and would stay on for 30 seconds (only), and if you were there for more than 30 seconds, it would likely turn off after which you would have to make some overt motion to make it turn on.  Further, it seemed to be "unsure" some times and instead of just switching on, it would go back and forth (I think it might have gotten confused by the flickering of the light as it came on or something.  Bottom line -- the model from Home Depot (still the only one available at my local store) ... is terrible.

I replaced my bad switches with this Hubbel model.  A simple setting allowed me to adjust sensitivity, direction, and time on.  It has worked flawlessly.

Go with a product that is designed to work well, not one designed to be cheap!

Also, I did notice the comment from the customer who reported that these kinds of controls may not be suitable for a switch location that may get direct sunlight -- this seems plausible, since they are "IR" -- meaning heat detecting.  But I don't think it's a general problem -- IR is the same method that most TV remotes use.  There was a time I was having a problem with my TV turning on and it turned out that it was due to sunlight hitting the IR detector on the TV.  Anyway, if your switch location gets direct sun, probably not a good option.

Overall, this product has done exactly what I wanted.

In a bright, day lit room, the switch turns the lights on and needs to be manually turned off.
Best to use in dark areas where the sun never shines.
Perhaps they have a different model for daylit areas.
