(2) Plug the appliance you'd like to test into the Kill A Watt. (3) Watch the LCD screen for read-outs on that appliance's use of voltage (volt), amperage (amp), wattage (watt), line frequency (Hz), and power factor (VA). As a party trick (and to get to the heart of vampire use), try turning off your appliance, and check to see if it is still drawing energy. Extra bonus points: teach your dog to press the display buttons.

truly eye opening experience. i got a killawatt just out of curiosity and it's become absolutely useful, and fascinating. i've since started using a whole house monitor as well, but this is a good place to start identifying what the real energy hogs are. money saving, and a lot of fun too.
